Planning Guides
The ALA Public Programs Office and other organizations have developed several guides for past and current programs that you can use to develop future cultural programs.

Encouraging Dialogue through Cultural Programming
Developed in response to September 11, this site provides a number of resources for librarians interested in creating programs dealing with current issues, such as terrorism, racial stereotypes, understanding world religions, and more. The site contains a list of programs held in the wake of September 11, 2001 at libraries across the country; a list of resources from state humanities councils; and links to additional resources.

Jazz Appreciation Month
Celebrate jazz during the month of April and all year long with public programming. The Smithsonian's Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) Web site has a "How to Celebrate JAM" guide that includes ideas for libraries and other organizations.

The Millennium Project for Public Libraries Online Guide
Developed to aid participants in The Millennium Project for Public Libraries, this guide provides basic information about developing and promoting book discussion programs. Discussion guides and themes from The Millennium Project are available under Discussion Guides.

National Poetry Month
The Academy of American Poets Web site contains extensive resources and planning guides for librarians planning to celebrate National Poetry Month each April. The Academy's site is also useful for other poetry programming.

Planning Your Community-Wide Read
This guide was compiled by the ALA Public Programs Office as a resource for librarians everywhere who are planning community-wide, or "One Book, One Community" projects. For more information about "One Book" projects, please visit our One Book" page.
