Becoming American - New Immigration Stories Immigrants
Stars ALA Public Programs Office
Children Adult Reader

Since its inception, America has welcomed immigrants from many countries, many backgrounds, and many experiences creating the rich tapestry of America. Books allow exploration of difficult themes, permit readers to see themselves and recognize traditional activities. Books also introduce other people, different times and new customs through vicarious explorations. Visit a diverse group of immigrants through time as you read the books recommended here for children from preschool through middle school.

Note: The recommended age categories follow those used by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) Notable Children’s Book Committee. Books suggested here are for children up through 14 years old.
